Why Does Bush Have Your Private Medical Records?
Question by Marc Miami: Why does Bush have your private medical records?
Bush administration is prying into your medical records in violation of the law
We learned yesterday that the Bush administration has created a database of every single prescription drug user/patient in the country (that would pretty much be all of us). The database was created pursuant to a 2005 law that was intended to prevent the abuse of prescription drugs. Funny that this massive new database of your private medical information is now being (ab)used for a purpose that wasn’t intended in or approved by the law.
The federal database of your private medical information is now being used by federal law enforcement to investigate crimes that have nothing to do with prescription drug abuse. We know this because yesterday ABC News disclosed that the feds checked the database to see what prescription meds the Virginia Tech shooter might have been on. How does the mass murder of students and faculty at Virginia Tech have anything to do with prescription drug abuse? It doesn’t.

I hope you are not for socialized medicine…because they are taking your drug pescription records now they’ll take them all then.
He doesn’t hold anybody’s private records, and you’re an idiot for thinking that.
1984!!!!
But I think Orwell underestimated to extent of the tyranny and control that would come….. and that is still to come
…….
I wish I had the hours in the day this President obviously has to do all he is accused of.
Not… The Bush administration doesn’t have the records…
They went to find out trough the medical record of the killer.
Medical records is at the Dr office where he was diagnostic.
the president thinks he is above the law. his daddy is a rich old coot so he thinks that what ever he does, he can get away with it.
Although I don’t like the law as you described it, if I were investigating the VT massacre, I would definitely want access to the coward’s medical history.
In 1966, Charles Whitman killed 16 people and left a note asking that his body be autopsied. They found he had a tumor in his brain that effected his emotions, rationale and basically drove him nuts.
So the government has my medical records; so what? Now they know how many cavities I have and that I’m obviously not Jewish.
and all this time i didnt think he cared, lol
Ah, yet another failed war: The War on Drugs.
So? Why should I care if the government knows what prescription drugs I’m on? So long as I’m taking them legally, and they are not broadcasting what I am taking across the country, they can go through all of my files they want.
The only people who should fear this are those who are abusing drugs. Otherwise, if they’re not coming through my home for no reason and interrupting my daily life, I could give a rats ass. All of this “The government is invading my privacy!!!” BS needs to die down. With all of the information readily available today in a digital medium, it’s easy for the government to regulate things differently than in the past. If it makes us safer, then so be it.
I frankly don’t care if the commander in chief knows I had a cold last week. Watchdog something important like the democratic congress.
That’s a BLOG. Try using a credible source.
You will find that governments all over the world have been collection information of people for years without their consent or knowledge, to ‘ensure’ their country’s national best interests in fighting and stopping crimes.
There isn’t anything about Bush that surprises me these days, and even though I am happy not to live in america or be a citizen there at all, I still find the idea of anyone except me and my G.P knowing my medical history to be appauling.
In one case a few years ago in Australia, a woman’s entire medical history was posted accidently on the internet for everyone to read while the medical profession was trying a new storage procedure, so nothing is safe these days.
You are stupid. They aren’t looking for prescription abuse. they are looking at past medical evaluations to determine if there were signs leading up to the shootings. They were looking into stuff like when he was admitted into that mental health facility. Or did you read that part? Besides, it doesn’t mean everyone is having their medical records pryedd into. This is investigation procedure. And another thing, I seriously doubt that the President is personally prying through medical records. And on top of that, what makes you think you have the right to use this mass killings to further your political beliefs? You have done nothing but disrespect the victims at Virginia Tech. Your parents must be proud.
I believe there is more than one reason for this database. People that don’t care about their privacy would care more if they knew what else it could be used for.
Sounds like another version of the Patriot Act. Bush found a connection between Penicillin and Al Qaida.
I’m pretty sure that database is older than the Bush administration, the FBI has been keeping extensive files on everybody since J. Edgar Hoover. With his previously established disregard for the constitution, is it any suprise he’d abuse such privileged information? At least they’re smart enough not to make arrests on the illegally obtained info. It’s big brother-ish, but they already have that data.
I bet he was on Rx antidepressants.
People have been known to go on crazy killing sprees on antidepressants,
it’s a bit of a side effect.
Prozac had DOZENS of lawsuits against it for people saying they killed others on it/or family members blaming it for their loved ones suicide,
well, the pharmaceutical companies won,
and ever since then you can’t say anything bad against those drugs without the drug companies suing YOU for libel.
So, YEAH> I would like to know what he was on if you don’t mind…
and if need be, there should be an FDA/government investigation into the safety of certain mind altering Rx drugs.
Do you think they do Prostate Exams in the Oval Office ?
Because he doesn’t have enough of his own!!
I’m not buying this. HIPA prohibits anyone from access to your medical records. I know this ’cause I just filled out the form so my wife could interact with my insurer. They wouldn’t even talk to her without the form.
The right to privacy in your medical records obviously expires when you die.
The ogvernment should not have access, because
1)their protection of files (even top secret files) has been shoddy at best.
2) If, for instance, you were treated for depression, say 20 years ago, and you are rejected for a government job *for any reason at all* you would have a cause of action because of that access.
3) An employer with a government contact might learn of your medical history and reject you for employment because of some medical problem you had.
5) Insurance companies might deny you insurance based on previous illnesses.
