Can Addictions Run in Families?
Question by 0127864: Can addictions run in families?
[rewrite]For example: I’m addicted to cutting, my dad was addicted to smoking, my grandmother was addicted to alcohol, and the list goes on. None of us are addicted to all the same things, but we all have a tendency to get addicted to anything.
So is that just a coincidence or is it possible for addictions in general to be passed down?
Hopefully you get what i mean. It’s a difficult question to phrase.

it is possible, some genes get you more attached to somethings then others such as gambling or alcohol.

i don’t think there is a genetic link here ( but i could be wrong.)
However, you live in a family that, for whatever reason, uses addictive substances (or actions) to cope with emotional pain or fear. Your grandmother couldn’t teach your Dad another, better way to cope, and he couldn’t teach you a healthier way to cope. So i think there is a familial role here.
