Moving to Richmond, What Do I Need to Know About the City?

Question by Ace: Moving to Richmond, what do I need to know about the city?
I’m going to graduate school this fall at Virginia Commonwealth University. What do I need to know about the city? I’m from Northern New York so I’m used to 8 months of winter, what’s the weather like? What are good places to go? What’s the best resource/s for looking for apartments? Thank you for your help!

I grew up near Richmond and spent 4 years at VCU, I absolutely love Richmond, though I moved away five years ago and haven’t spent much time there recently but hope I can help a little. Weather wise you pretty much get four seasons though winters are mild with not much snow and summers are long, hot and humid, it’s definitely going to be a huge change form Upstate NY (I have/had family near Rochester and Platsburgh so I am familiar with that weather also and I can assure you Richmond weather is much better!!) Spring is short but pleasant and fall is wonderful! Richmond is a small city but there’s a lot to do. Great restaurants (Bottoms Up pizza is the best!) and shopping, fun nightlife (in Shockoe Bottom), many historic places and lots of nice parks and walks. Maymont is a nice park, there are also parks all along the James River with trails and you can climb out on the rocks on the river. The Canal Walk is downtown and follows along the canal. Carytown is a neat little neighborhood with good restaurants and cute little shops. There are outdoor concerts at different locations all the time in spring and summer. The Fan is a neighborhood right near campus where a lot of students live, so you may want to check that area out for an apartment. You may hear some stuff about the high crime rate in Richmond but to be honest I spent everyday there for 4 years and never felt unsafe, even at night. I think most of the crime is drug related and if you’re not involved with that you shouldn’t have any problems. Maybe try Craig’s List to find a place, I’m not really sure as I lived out of the city and commuted in every day. Have fun, I think you’ll like it, the people are friendly and the weather warm!

Also you are less than 2 hours from DC in one direction, the beach in another and the mountains in another!!
