How Do You Get Someone Into Drug Treatment Programs?
Question by Sheryl S: How do you get someone into drug treatment programs?
Anyone have any suggestions on coping with a family member who denies they are a crack user? I have someone who desperately needs to get treatment, but flatly denies the addiction and accuses everyone else of being “liars.” He is truly paranoid and it’s frightening just to try to talk to him.
We are at wit’s end in our family and are scared.
Appreciate all suggestions — no spam or sarcasm please, this is a serious family matter and we want to help the person. None of us have experience in this arena.
Oh no! I have posted this in the wrong category. My apologies to everyone.
But a big thank you to all who were kind enough to resond. All answers were good and deserving of “Best Answer.”
Only one person, DougF, saw fit to criticize me but pointed out my shortcomings in making an error on my posting. DougF, have you ever made an error in your lifetime? If not, you must be a very special individual.
Again, I apologize — not sure what I did wrong because I was reading Photography, then went on to ask my question. I could have sworn I chose Family & Relationships as category but I musn;t have exited Photography correctly.
Best to all!

I think everyone has one in their family. Have you tried an intervention as seen on TV. They seem to work for some people who are at their wits end, when you get to this point it’s about the only thing left to do, I’ve seen people on this show who I thought were hopeless, and it worked for them, they would show the person a year later, and wow what a difference, I’m very sorry for you and your family. Check with your local programs and see if they have this or know of anyone who does. Have you tried to write to the show maybe they could help, that’s what their there for, and this way you wouldn’t have to put out money that you probably don’t have.

Proposition 36: How it Works – www.shouselaw.com 888.327.4652 CA defense lawyers explain Proposition (Prop) 36: who qualifies, how the drug diversion treatment program works. Proposition 36…more commonly referred to as “Prop. 36″…is a criminal sentencing initiative that was passed by California voters on November 7, 2000. Prop. 36 requires that eligible non-violent drug offenders serve their time in a drug treatment program instead of in jail or prison. Proposition 36…which is defined in Penal Code sections 1210-1210.1 PC and in 3063.1 (as it relates to people on parole)…is one type of California drug diversion. “Drug diversion” typically refers to the practice of allowing eligible defendants to have their criminal charges/conviction dismissed if they successfully complete a court-approved drug treatment program. A court approved “drug treatment program” refers to a treatment program that includes one or more of the following: drug education, outpatient services or residential treatment, detoxification services or narcotic replacement therapy, or aftercare services. It does not refer to the drug rehabilitation programs that are offered in a prison or jail facility. Specifically, Prop. 36 changed California law to require that first and second-time defendants who have been convicted of nonviolent drug possession offenses receive up to twelve months of substance abuse treatment in lieu of incarceration. This period may be extended by up to two more six-month periods if necessary. Proposition 36 …

Please be patient since they possibly feel hopeless and abandoned.
A lot of patience since they do not recognize that they have a problems. Keep an eye and find out when they are approachable before talking to them about treatment.
Include family and friends that care so have more ideas.
Some people start using drugs that include alcohol.
The following site explains how I almost became an alcoholic after my divorce.
Drugs have played havoc with the American people in the last 30 to 40 years. I have a neice that is on crack and also in denial. She just spent 45 days in jail for driving without a license but still denies crack use. Her antics are killing her and everyone around her. We also are at wits end. When my daughter was in high school she got in with a bad crowd and got into “soft” drugs. She started drinking alcohol and smoking pot. After graduation she started using cocaine then turned to crack. In 2002 she was run over from head to toe by her drug dealer boyfriend. I tried Baker Acting her but they only keep them for 3 days. She is an adult and has to want help. If the person is underage you could send him to rehab but after one gets of age they have to agree. I am a nurse and worked at a jail. I asked the psychologist and seasoned professionals what to do. I talked to a laison for rehabilation and got advise to have her arrested when she stole my credit cards and checks and used them. Then she was to be caught in the system and forced to go to rehab. It seemed to be working until she absconded. She ended up having a criminal record and had to go to prison for a year and a half. It has devistated the whole family. She got out and was trying to change her life and id well for about 6 months. Then she went back to her old ways. She is 29 years old and has no real chance at this time to do anything productive with her life. I regret having her arrested. I did not help her but it ruined her ability to get apartments, college education, and many jobs. Giving money is definitely not the answer. I heard of one family that intervened by all sitting down with the person and telling the person that they knew what is going on and that they were there for them. The would not let the person deny the facts. They were there physically and emotionally for the person and they stood together and gave them all the support they could until the drug person actually changed. The problem is when they are in denial, they are such good liars and can be so believable. You have to be strong but carefule not to be gullible and an enabler.
You can’t get or force someone to get into a drug rehab centre unless they can recognize that they have a problem . You can only mention to that person that when they ready to get help you will be there for them . First its the admission that they have problem and once they are admitting , is when you spring into action . Otherwise your effort will be fruitless and it will devastating on you as well emotionally on the family . You seek a support group for your need on how to deal with the matter . The addict may not have hit bottom yet , and may never as well . The family must take care of themselves emotionally and spiritually , and stick together . I am answering your question very honestly , I was a cocaine addict once upon a time . I went to a rehab and admitted to myself that I had a problem .The very best of luck to you and your family , and God bless all of you .
If he isnt ready to take his life back, nothing you do will make it better. You can throw him into center, but he wont work the program to his benefit, just put his time into getting out, and than gong back to the drug.
Sometimes tough love is the best thing you can do. Put him on his own, until he is ready for help.
If you allow the druggie to remain part of your life, while continuing the behavior, that is up to you, but it will prevent you from moving forward in your life if you give up any energy to caring for the druggie. It will not only destroy the druggies life, but possibly the entire familys cohesiveness.
If your an adult thats your decision, but if you have kids, parents, grandparents, it will also take a lot of the energy from them in a lot of ways.
Intervention (It takes lot’s of preperation) and in the meanwhile for yourself look up meetings for Alanon. These meetings are very helpful since most of the people are in the same boat as you are. I wish you and your family the best of luck!
If the person denies using drugs, how are you going to get them to get help?
How do you know they are using crack? Have you seen them? If you found a little glass stem, or metal bowl with a piece of black filter in it and maybe a small tube attached in their pockets, yeah that’s a crack, or meth pipe.
Maybe they are just having some other emotional problems, and having you accuse them of using drugs, when the are not is making them worse.
I wish you all the best
M Scafiddi took $12.500 to rep me on a weed and gun case in San Bernardino back in 07,he was a dump truck back then and had a state appointed lawyer rep my case every time I went to court that I could have gotten without paying him the money.Funny how’s he in another money making business.cop, lawyer, now running a drug? treatment center, man take your money hungry ass in another city with that bullshit!!!!!
Prop 36 sounds like? a good idea.
if prop 36 passes? BUY A FUCKEN GUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you have to wait 18 months for petitioning for an early probation termination for a prop 36/pc1210 case? Some public defenders say you do, but I spoke with my probation officer and she stated that having your probation terminated? when you’ve only been on it for a year is very well possible.
