12step rehabs have a slightly higher success rate than “free” AA, and they have about a 5% success rate at the end of one year, the same as quitting on your own.

Here’s a list of alcohol treatment methods, rated by effectiveness:

Note: twelve-step facilitation (rehabs) is # 37; AA is # 38.

How Do I Help My Boyfriend Stop Smoking and Be Supportive?

Question by Q: How do I help my boyfriend stop smoking and be supportive?
[rewrite]I don’t date smokers, but before we started, he promised he’d quit smoking for me… Stupid me, that was 6 months ago… He smokes a pack a day, but he rips the filters off the cigarette before he smokes them. I spent a lot of money on patches for him, which really reduced his smoking, but he couldnt even go a day without a cigarette even while wearing a patch. And now he’s back to smoking like he used to. He wants to quit, he even called a quit smoking hotline. He ‘tries’ quitting or at least cutting back pretty often, but nothing really improves. I was very supportive at first always telling him he’s doing a great job when he makes a minor improvement, …but after trying to help so much with no result, I’m starting to give up. It makes me scared because when I lay next to him, I hear his lungs making squeaky noises when he breathes. I know what it’s like to be addicted to something, but why is it so hard for him to NOT go to the store and buy cigarettes…
