That depends on how long your brother has been infected. The progression of the disease depends on many factors, the person’s general health, early treatment, etc.

HIV is the virus that damages the immune system and can lead to AIDS. HIV kills CD4 cells which help our bodies fight infections. When the CD4 cell count drops to 200 or below, AIDS is diagnosed. These days, with appropriate medical monitoring and treatment, many people who have HIV are living longer, healthier, and increasing the time between diagnosis of HIV and diagnosis of AIDS. Factors that influence how successful treatment will be include how healthy the person was before being infected with HIV, how soon did diagnosis occur after infection, whether or not the person is seeing a specialist and following the specialist’s advice, how well the person responds to the treatment, and how the person responds to the virus itself.
Let your brother know you are there to listen if and when he does want to talk. Encourage him to check with his doctor for referral to support groups in your area. There may be support groups in your area for families of people who have HIV as well–You can check with your local hospital to find out.
HIV is not transmitted by saliva or by casual contact. Give your brother a hug. Let him know that you are not afraid to touch him.
