well one thing is that in hospitals they can get properly treated and detoxicated from an drugs that are in their system, in jail they will not get that type of service.

Because it’s not a crime that hurts other people and it is a disease as much as alcoholism, depression, diabetes, and cancer are. Drug addicts aren’t evil people, they just need help.

    1 Drug addicts are not criminals. If they commit crimes, it’s usually a direct result of the addiction and not just criminal behavior.
    #2 Prisons have neither the money or resources or systems in place to treat the drug addiction. Locking someone up for a crime, but not addressing the addiction will not CURE them.
    #3 The sooner we can get them rehabilitated from their drug addiction the sooner they can be productive members of society. Prisons are for punishment and not rehabilitation.
    #4 Hospitals are set up to deal with the physical, mental and medical needs of an addict. They can give immediate care and treatment for the problem instead of having a person sit around in a jail cell doing nothing.
    #5 Without rehab, they’ll end up back in prison very quickly.

    ===================================================
    My boyfriends brother got out of jail on Saturday. He’s about 36 years old and has spent the majority of his adult life in prison for crimes relating to drug use. His parents are both drug addicts who shared their addiction with him at the age of 14. He almost never had a chance to live a normal childhood and adult life.

    He’s never been out of jail for more than 2 years at a time. At 36, he gets out of jail, has no real education, a huge criminal record, no real job skills, no chance of getting a great job in this economy and no real relationships and friends to help. He’s used and abused his friends and family where most will barely help him now.

    He’s trying to get into a drug treatment program now, but can’t afford it. He’s staying with a friend, but that is only for a few nights. Without drug treatment (and fast) he will likely be homeless and depressed and broke. It will lead to theft, which will lead to drug use, which will lead to being locked up again – the usual pattern for his life.

    Without real rehab, he will have no change of getting good job skills, education, self-esteem, a loving relationship with a quality women, etc. He needs someone who’s prepared in dealing with drug addicts and their associated illness and not family who end up being used and enablers to his problem.

    Yes, he’s got a criminal record… a long one, but never violent. He’s just a druggy looking for a quick fix and needs something to sell at the pawn shop for his next high. He doesn’t want to hurt anyone, he just wants to escape into the fantasy world that drugs provide. I personally don’t like to deal with him, but he still deserves to be treated life a human being with respect and love. A prison doesn’t do this… it only makes him bitter and actually he learns more bad habits from the other inmates.

    Prison should be for the people who commit violent acts against others, as a society we believe can’t be trusted to live among us or who have commited some horrible acts of crime that they need to be punished for their crimes and only jail will do.

    Druggies do not belong in prisons. It serves no purpose, and costs millions of tax dollars to feed/support/clothe them when they really just need rehab.

    Drug addicts aren’t criminals and they shouldn’t be treated as so. If they are placed in jail, they think they’ve done something wrong and they won’t get the help they need. If they are placed in a hospital they will get help. They need to recover, and that isn’t going to happen if they are put in jail.
